History

The main problem that small-scale fishermen are facing is the depletion of fishery resource. The depletion is mainly caused by over fishing with illegal fishing gears especially illegal fishing with push and trawls nets in a three-kilometer zone. The zone is a protected area for marine life and fishing ground for small-scale fishermen. Moreover, fish population has dramatically decreased. This is caused by the destruction of mangrove forest which is a nursery area for juvenile marine life.

During 1991 to 1992, with support from Wildlife Fund Thailand under the Royal Patronage of H.M. the Queen (WFT), Phuket Environmental Club established Sea Turtle Conservation Project in Baan Mai Khaw, Talang, Phuket. During 1993 to 1996, two environmental projects were established with support from Thai Volunteer Service, Khao Ping-gun Group, Phuket Environmental Club, and Wildlife Fund Thailand under the Royal Patronage of H.M. the Queen. The first project is Pangnga Coastal Resource Restoration financially support by Asia Foundation. The second one is Project for Community Organization Development in Phuket Coast financially support by Local Development Institute. During 1995 to 1996, Thai Volunteer Service and all of non-governmental organizations in Pangnga and Ranong agreed to work together under Collaboration for Andaman Natural Resource Restoration Project. The project covers the areas of Pangnga, Phuket, Ranong, Krabi, and Satun provinces.
